Unify identity before extending mail access

A custom email server often starts as infrastructure and becomes an identity challenge: who can authenticate, how passwords are governed, how access is revoked, and how application users map to mailbox identities. Keycloak can provide a central identity provider that Django applications trust and that the mail authentication layer can query or federate against.

Architecture pattern

Django authenticates users through Keycloak. The email server authentication layer should validate credentials or tokens against Keycloak using a supported protocol or controlled bridge. The exact implementation depends on the mail stack, but the principle is consistent: Keycloak owns identity lifecycle and policy; the mail server enforces access based on validated identity.

Key considerations

  • Prefer token or federation-based flows over duplicating passwords.
  • Define mailbox naming and user mapping rules.
  • Apply MFA where supported by the access channel.
  • Log authentication outcomes for audit and abuse detection.

The outcome is simpler lifecycle governance across app and email access.
