Rollback must be designed before go-live

Teams often define cutover steps with precision and rollback steps with optimism. In API migration, rollback depends on DNS, routing, tokens, credentials, product state, cache behavior, backend effects, and consumer retries. If these are not understood before go-live, rollback may not restore service cleanly.

Rollback design

Identify what can be rolled back and what cannot. Token issuance, credential changes, and app status updates may create state that must be reconciled. Establish a rollback window, decision authority, test checkpoints, and communication process.

Readiness checklist

  • DNS or routing rollback tested before production.
  • Credential state changes frozen or logged.
  • Source platform remains operational through the rollback window.
  • Monitoring confirms restoration, not just traffic movement.

A rollback plan is a sign that the migration team respects production.
