KVMs often reveal hidden operations

Key value maps can contain routing configuration, partner settings, feature flags, and sometimes secrets. Migration is a good moment to decide which values belong in Apigee KVMs, which belong in secret management, and which should be removed entirely.

Target practices

Classify KVM entries by sensitivity and volatility. Move secrets to an approved secret store where the target architecture supports it. Define rotation ownership and avoid hard-coded environment assumptions in proxy bundles. KVM values should be promoted through controlled configuration, not edited manually during incidents.

Checklist

  • Export KVMs by environment and owner.
  • Classify sensitive values before migration.
  • Validate encrypted and non-encrypted target behavior.
  • Document change and rotation procedures.

Configuration migration is not complete until operations can change safely after go-live.
